The meeting was focused on the country\u2019s&nbsp;2013 financial<br \/>\nstatistics, but Bitcoin popped up as the journalists started asking<br \/>\nquestions about it.<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" id=\"attachment_5426\" style=\"width: 269px;\">\n<div class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:People%27s_Bank_of_China.jpg?uselang=pt\"><i><br \/><\/i><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\u201cWe took a look at Bitcoin and it<br \/>\ndoesn\u2019t have the characteristics of a currency. As far as I know, the<br \/>\nvast majority of countries does not recognize Bitcoin as a currency\u201d,<br \/>\nSheng Song Cheng answered.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nBefore confirming cryptocurrency\u2019s<br \/>\nstatus in China as a \u201cvirtual good\u201d, he also added that the \u201cPeople\u2019s<br \/>\nBank and the relevant departments <b>will continue to focus on Bitcoin and its associated risks<\/b>,<br \/>\n strengthen the monitoring and&nbsp;analysis and guide the public to<br \/>\nestablish a correct concept of money and investment philosophy\u201d.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nThe authorities\u2019 posture regarding<br \/>\ncryptocurrency falls under&nbsp;Sheng Song Cheng\u2019s public opinion about<br \/>\nBitcoin. Recently, he wrote an <a href=\"http:\/\/finance.sina.com.cn\/zl\/china\/20140102\/104117821795.shtml\">article<\/a><br \/>\n saying&nbsp;that \u201cit would be difficult to see how Bitcoin could ever be<br \/>\nconsidered a currency in the future\u201d. The English edition of the<br \/>\nnewspaper&nbsp;Global Times even quoted Sheng as the author of a powerful<br \/>\nsentence: \u201cBitcoin is merely a utopia for technology supremacists and<br \/>\nabsolute liberalists\u201d.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nStill, according to the opinion of some<br \/>\nBitcoiners, this means that China is legitimizing&nbsp;Bitcoin, despite the<br \/>\ncountry\u2019s successive warnings about&nbsp;the high risks of dealing with<br \/>\nthe&nbsp;digital coin.
