(Bloomberg<\/a>) When MasterCard Inc. paid a team of
\nlobbyists about $70,000 earlier this year to promote the bank-card network\u2019s views, a new topic made their list: bitcoin.<\/p>\n

Washington-based Peck Madigan Jones had five of its
\nlobbyists, including Jeff Peck<\/a>, who leads the firm\u2019s financial
\nservices and capital markets practice, work on subjects
\nincluding \u201cbitcoin and mobile payments\u201d in the House of
\nRepresentatives and Senate during the first quarter, according
\nto a regulatory filing<\/a>. Other topics the firm handled for
\nMasterCard included data breaches, interchange fees and gift
\ncards.<\/p>\n

As big financial companies dismiss bitcoin\u2019s prospects, the
\ndocument shows MasterCard is at least talking with lawmakers
\nabout the virtual currency, which entrepreneurs pitch as a cheap
\nalternative to established payment systems. Investors in bitcoin
\nbusinesses are working to head off burdensome regulation and
\ncapture some of the combined $61.3 billion in annual revenue
\ngenerated by the four largest U.S. credit-card networks.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were gathering information in connection with recent
\ncongressional hearings to better understand the policy issues
\naround virtual and anonymous currencies,\u201d said Jim Issokson, a
\nspokesman for Purchase, New York-based MasterCard.<\/p>\n
