\n Ripple is essentially setting out
\nto be the next PayPal. The difference is that Ripple will handle
\nmultiple currencies\u2014perhaps even all of them\u2014and make
\ntransactions immediate. There will be no more waiting around for days in
\n order for a payment to move from one party to another. To facilitate
\nthis process, Ripple invented its own currency, XRP. Unsurprisingly,
\nmany have seen this digital currency as a natural rival to Bitcoin and
\nother versions. Yet this isn\u2019t necessarily the case. Unlike Bitcoin, XRP
\n has a stated purpose it\u2019s been designed \u201cto streamline transactions\u201d.
\nRipple really doesn\u2019t need it to do much more than that, so it
\nseems unlikely they have much interest in putting resources behind
\nmaking it the number one digital currency in the world. XRP may turn out
\n to be the best thing that ever happened to Bitcoin. One challenge to
\nBitcoin, or any other digital currency for that matter, will always be
\nthe public\u2019s reluctance to adopt it. As the years go by, it may dwindle,
\n but for the foreseeable future, this remains a hurdle.<\/div>\n

\nThanks to XRP, though, transactions
\n can involve Bitcoin without one party ever even knowing about it. For
\nexample, if you wish to buy a book from someone using Bitcoins and they
\nwish to be compensated with yuan, this would normally be problematic.
\nYou might even stop using Bitcoins because so many people you purchase
\nfrom don\u2019t accept them. With Ripple, make the purchase and they\u2019ll
\nconvert your Bitcoin into XRP and then into yuan. You get your book
\nusing Bitcoins and the seller gets the yuan they desire. This highlights
\n XRP\u2019s ability to extend the reach of any digital currency on the
\nmarket. So while it may be viewed as a rival, the truth is that it might
\n be their greatest ally.<\/div>\n
