\n (CoinDesk<\/a>) Oxford Dictionaries Online (ODO) has officially added the word
\n\u2018cryptocurrency\u2019 to its database. The decision was made as part of a
\nquarterly update this May that also included the words \u2018bikeable\u2019,
\n\u2018snacky\u2019 and \u2018time suck\u2019.<\/div>\n
\nThe announcement follows the August 2013 update that saw \u2018bitcoin\u2019 added to the respected resource<\/a>. At the time, the ODO told CoinDesk that bitcoin<\/a> was added due to its significant presence online and in the mainstream media.<\/div>\n
\nThe ODO\u2019s addition of \u2018cryptocurrency\u2019 indicates that the organisation views it as a recent term that has emerged to become \u201csignificant or important<\/a>\u201c, and that it believes the word could become more widely used.<\/div>\n
\nThe ODO defines cryptocurrency as:<\/div>\n
\n

\n\u201cA
\n digital currency in which encryption techniques are used to regulate
\nthe generation of units of currency and verify the transfer of funds,
\noperating independently of a central bank.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\nUsage examples<\/h2>\n
\nThe
\n ODO further provided example sentences that, in part, aim to sum up the
\n values of those who are interested in the industry and community.<\/div>\n
\nThe first sample sentence reads:<\/div>\n
\n

\n\u201cDecentralized
\n cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin now provide an outlet for personal
\nwealth that is beyond restriction and confiscation.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\nAdditional
\n sentences describe how cryptocurrencies are valued based on supply and
\ndemand, and highlight that the total value of the market is more than
\n$8bn.<\/div>\n

\nContemporary language<\/h2>\n
\nWhile notable to the bitcoin community, the ODO is notably the organisation\u2019s online-only resource on contemporary English<\/a> that includes modern meanings of many traditional words.<\/div>\n
\nAs
\n noted by Angus Stevenson, Head of Dictionary Projects at Oxford
\nUniversity Press in a 2013 interview with CoinDesk, inclusion in the ODO
\n \u201cdoesn\u2019t make any judgement on whether [the word] is good, bad,
\nworthwhile or anything else\u201d.<\/div>\n
\nBy comparison, the Oxford English
\nDictionary is more of a historical cannon that includes words and
