An unknown hacker has reaped an estimated 500 million dogecoins \u2013 worth <\/span>nearly $200,000 at today\u2019s prices \u2013 by hacking into a series of data <\/span>storage hubs for computer networks, according to\u00a0<\/span>SecureWorks<\/a>, an information services subsidiary of personal computing giant\u00a0<\/span>Dell<\/a>. <\/span>The <\/span>SecureWorks report revealed that the hacker targeted network attached <\/span>storage (NAS) boxes made by Taiwan-based Synology Inc. and used its <\/span>computing power to mine <\/span>dogecoin<\/a> through a private pool. The action <\/span>caused problems for Synology\u2019s customers.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

(CoinDesk<\/a>) An unknown hacker has reaped an estimated 500 million dogecoins \u2013 worth nearly $200,000 at today\u2019s prices \u2013 by hacking into a series of data storage hubs for computer networks, according to\u00a0SecureWorks<\/a>, an information services subsidiary of personal computing giant\u00a0Dell<\/a>.<\/div>\n
The SecureWorks report revealed that the hacker targeted network attached storage (NAS) boxes made by Taiwan-based Synology Inc. and used its computing power to mine dogecoin through a private pool. The action caused problems for Synology\u2019s customers, some of whom reported poor performance on Facebook in February.<\/div>\n
SecureWorks called the months-long intrusion unprecedented, saying:<\/div>\n
\n
\u201cTo date, this incident is the single most profitable, illegitimate mining operation.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Following reports of an issue, the investigators ultimately discovered a folder entitled \u2018PWNED\u2019 that contained the mining software CPUMiner and the capacity to conceal the program.<\/div>\n
The address the mined dogecoins were being sent to was also identified<\/a>,
\nrevealing\u00a0the accumulation of more than 400 million dogecoins.\u00a0Along
\nwith another wallet, the hacker generated roughly 500 million dogecoins
\nbetween January and April.<\/div>\n
In
\naddition to exploring the technical aspects of the hack attack,
\nSecureWorks delved into the possible identity of the assailant,
\nsuggesting that \u201cthe findings strongly indicate that the threat actor is
\nof German descent\u201d.<\/div>\n

Hacker used private pool<\/h2>\n
The
\nconfiguration file of the software that was infecting Synology\u2019s NAS
\nboxes pointed to the presence of hidden mining software.<\/div>\n
CPUMiner,
\nthe program used, had been modified to run on the boxes and was
\nconnecting to a dogecoin pool not associated with any public mining
\ngroup, SecureWorks said. Each NAS box acted as an individual miner,
\nconnecting to the pool and generating dogecoins.<\/div>\n
SecureWorks
\naccessed the data being sent to the NAS boxes, which allowed them to
\nascertain the dogecoin wallet<\/a> address holding the fraudulently mined
\ndogecoins, as well as the possible identity of the hacker.<\/div>\n
Dubbed
\n\u201cfoilo.root3\u2033 in the configuration file, the user appears to have a
\nconnection with accounts on GitHub and BitBucket, although it remains
\nunclear whether the name is unique to a single person.<\/div>\n

Mining malware gains<\/h2>\n
The
\ndogecoin mining attack represents one of the more creative approaches
\nto generating digital currency through fraudulent means.\u00a0Other recent
\nattempts have found wrongdoers using unique means to upload software to
\nmine bitcoin<\/a>, but in nearly all cases, the program was designed to
\nconceal itself and its operations.<\/div>\n
Last month, unknown hackers attempted to distribute bitcoin mining malware through a modified torrent file of the video game Watch Dogs<\/a>. This attack was notable as it targeted another form of online piracy.<\/div>\n
A
\nmore unusual concealed attempt to create mining botnets out of mobile
\nphones was uncovered in April. At the time, a group of wallpaper apps
\nlisted on the Google Play app store<\/a> were discovered to contain bitcoin mining programs.<\/div>\n
