To get a perspective on the possible road ahead, All Things Alt caught up with Max Keiser, host of The Keiser Report<\/a>, guru for maxcoin<\/a>, and one of the leading voices behind StartCOIN<\/a>, a new altcoin-powered crowdfunding initiative.<\/div>\n

The case for altcoins<\/h2>\n
Keiser suggested that altcoins are a great way for investors to diversify their digital currency performance. He said that he maintains \u201ca diversified portfolio of coins, with bitcoin being the biggest portion\u201d, adding that he believes \u201calts offer a great way to have exposure to different segments\u201d.<\/div>\n
He explained:<\/div>\n
\n

\u201cAltcoins offer ways to gain exposure to different segments of the crypto-universe. Dash<\/a> is a brilliant coin that addresses a real need. As I said before, the market as a whole is set for 100x growth so there is plenty of upside.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

When asked whether or not it is ethical to promote altcoin investment, as large price swings can lead to losses, Keiser offered, \u201cI\u2019m like Warren Buffet. I talk about the coins I myself own including maxcoin\u201d.<\/div>\n

The future of maxcoin<\/h2>\n
<\/div>\n
Some critics have said that Keiser abandoned maxcoin, leaving its reputation \u2013 and price \u2013 up to the whims of market movers. Keiser conceded that the development team was \u201coverwhelmed at the launch\u201d. However, he rejected the idea that the project was a failure and said that things are still going on behind the scenes that could produce some positive results if successful.<\/div>\n
He elaborated:<\/div>\n
\n

\u201cIn the case of maxcoin, this was a coin that was started by students at Bristol University who I don\u2019t think were prepared for the huge interest they got but I supported them and continue to do so because they\u2019re very talented and we\u2019re still very early in the game.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Keiser added that he thinks \u201cwe\u2019ll see a return to the old highs before the end of the year\u201d and that \u201cit\u2019s probably a good buy at these levels\u201d.<\/div>\n

Bitcoin still the king<\/h2>\n
On the other hand, Keiser believes that while altcoins have a role<\/a> to play, ultimately it is bitcoin<\/a> that will remain the top digital currency.<\/div>\n
He remarked:<\/div>\n
\n

\u201cLet me be clear. Everybody should have, as their core holding, some bitcoin. Bitcoin is here to stay and is set to top $400 billion. I agree with the Winklevoss twins on this.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Still, Keiser said that alts remain a significant part of the future of digital currency. He touched on the political ramifications of digital currencies, which ties into the concept of decentralization that is being realized in crowdfunding<\/a> and eCommerce<\/a> projects currently in development. Additionally, Keiser said that alts \u2013 along with bitcoin \u2013 will contribute to the broader, long-term shift away from fiat currencies in favor of digital currencies.<\/div>\n
He concluded:<\/div>\n
\n

\u201cAs long as Amir [Taaki] and his followers are around, bitcoin and alt coins will be pushing the political envelope and God bless them. We need as much political disruption as can get these days.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Strange alt of the week<\/h2>\n
Last week, we look at several altcoins that celebrated the arrival of the FIFA World Cup. While those didn\u2019t fall into the unusual category per-say, they were notable for the fact that they existed largely to promote a temporary event.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Perhaps these belong to a class of coins unironically dubbed \u2018commemorative coins\u2019, but all the same, it\u2019s possible that we might see more coins of a similar nature as important events develop.\u00a0An upcoming coin release suggests this may be so, as cantorcoin<\/a>, an alt that seemingly celebrates the momentous (and in many books historic) political loss of US Congressman and former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor<\/a> in a primary election. With the slogan \u201cModerately Rare \u2013 Conservatively Secure\u201d, cantorcoin has earned this week\u2019s Strange Alt of the Week award.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Notably, cantorcoin\u2019s max supply count is 100,614 coins. According to a development statement posted on\u00a0CryptoCoinsTable.com<\/a>, this number is meant to represent the \u201cthe 10th day of the 6th month of the year 2014\u201d, or 10th June of this year. This is the same day as the Republican primary that cost Eric Cantor his seat in the next Congress<\/a>, later all but forcing him to resign his leadership post.<\/div>\n

As well, the developer states that there is no premine. They estimated that the total amount of cantor coins will go quickly and become \u201ca collectible coin\u201d, saying that any available coins will \u201cdisappear quicker that water drops on Route 66\u201d.<\/div>\n
