(CoinDesk<\/a>) John Bush and Catherine Bleish began a road trip across the US with
\ntheir family of four this week, during which they will only spend
\nbitcoin.<\/div>\n
Beginning in San Marcos, Texas, they drove into
\nWashington on Friday, the first stop on the \u201cUncoinventional Living
\nTour\u201d, for the Bitcoin<\/a> in the Beltway conference.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The self-dubbed Blush family will drive for four weeks and 4,400 miles, also stopping in Lancaster, New Hampshire for the 11th
\nannual Porcupine Freedom Festival and then to Kansas City, Missouri \u2013
\nBleish\u2019s hometown \u2013 over the Independence<\/a> Day holiday before returning
\nback to Texas.<\/div>\n
They will shoot five episodes of their reality show \u201cSovereign Living\u201d during their journey.<\/div>\n

Fighting a different way<\/h2>\n
Bush
\nand Bleish are both grassroots activists that spent years fighting the
\npolitical system in the US. Each helped start local political action
\ncommittes that focused on constitutional activism, civil liberties and
\nanti-police state causes in their hometowns of Austin, Texas and Kansas
\nCity, respectively.<\/div>\n
Deciding to build a family brought them to the
\nrealisation that they needed to change their lifestyle choices \u2013 opting
\ninstead to look for ways of being self-sufficient and building
\ncommunities separate from government influence. Bush told CoinDesk:<\/div>\n
\n
\u201cWe
\nstarted to think that if we really want to change the world to create a
\nmore free society, the first thing we can do is to change the way we
\nlive and start to live more free ourselves, and stop participating in
\ncentralised or coercive institutions \u2026 Both of us began to realise that a
\nlot of work we were doing wasn\u2019t making us more free. In fact, it was
\njust exhausting us and spending all our energy and our money and our
\ntime.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Blush family farm<\/h2>\n
In aiming to get
\noff the grid, the family moved just outside of Austin, to start a farm
\non which it produces its own food, provides its own source of water and
\nharvests its own alternative energy.<\/div>\n
For the vision of their
\nlifestyle to be realised, they\u2019ve set goals: to produce 50% of their own
\nfood, store 50% of their own water, and reduce their dependency on the
\ncentral energy grid by 50%.<\/div>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s what the show\u2019s all about,\u201d
\nsaid Bush. \u201cTrying to document and educate people about the values of
\nliving a voluntary, natural life.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Their show intends to document
\ntheir lives as they learn each day from their lifestyle, their
\ncommunities and themselves, as well as teach others how everyone can be
\nself-reliant and free from government influence \u2013 without fighting.
\nAfter they\u2019ve wrapped filming for episodes five and six of \u201cSovereign
\nLiving\u201d they hope to be able to share it with the world through a media
\nstreaming service like Netflix or Hulu.<\/div>\n

Planning ahead<\/h2>\n
Bleish
\nmentioned that this is the first time in their bitcoin experience where
\nthey\u2019ve had enough tools and resources to live on bitcoin alone, citing
\nplatforms such as Gyft<\/a> and eGifter<\/a>, as well as the recent news by Expedia<\/a>. Nevertheless, she emphasised the amount of effort it takes to plan a bitcoin-only itinerary:<\/div>\n
\n
\u201cIt\u2019s
\nhard, it\u2019s taken a lot of pre-planning. I had to look at every single
\nstop along the way and see what gas stations they had to make sure that
\nwe were buying the appropriate amount of gift cards for each gas
\nstation.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n
For example, she explained that driving to
\nthe northeast of the country, she found Exonn gas stations at each stop,
\nbut that on the drive back home there weren\u2019t any \u2013 but there were BP
\nstations.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Despite the need to \u201creally be on top of things\u201d she
\nadded: \u201cI want the world to know that it is possible to travel the
\ncountry using bitcoin only. And it\u2019s not only possible but you can do it
\ncomfortably and take care of a family of four along the way.\u201d<\/div>\n
